Spectrophotometry of the Periodic Acid-schiff Reaction with Pituitary Hormones in Vitro and in Histological Sections
نویسندگان
چکیده
The spectral light absorption of the in vitro periodic acid-Schiff reactions of 4 purified pituitary hormones is described. The absorption spectra present a maximum between 560 and 565 mmicro. The color developed conforms with Beer's law for the ranges of concentration examined. The different hormones exhibit different chromogenicity per unit of biological activity: the color produced by 1 unit of FSH is equivalent to approximately 2 of TSH, 4 of LH, and 30 of ACTH. Microspectrophotometric measurements of the PAS-positive structures in histological sections of the human pituitary give absorption curves with shapes similar to those obtained in vitro, although quantitative differences exist. It is concluded that under the proper experimental conditions microspectra of the pituitary structures might, in the future, prove to give a quantitative measure of aldehyde groups generated from glycoprotein tropins by periodate oxidation.

Anatomical and cytohistological study of the pituitary gland in adult turkey
In order to conduct this study, eight adult turkey heads were obtained. Pituitary glands were harvested following cranial bones removal and examined morphologically and anatomically as well as topographically. Then, tissue sections were prepared and stained using Hematoxylin and Eosin, Alcian blue, orange G and periodic acid-Schiff staining techniques. The results showed that turkey pituitary g...
متن کاملHistochemical study of follicles in the senescent porcine pituitary gland.
Follicles displaying a positive periodic acid-Schiff reaction to a colloid substance in the anterior pituitary gland have been observed in many vertebrates, including humans. It is also known that these follicles greatly increase in number and size with age. We therefore performed histochemical analysis of these colloid follicles in the senescent porcine pituitary gland in order to clarify thei...
متن کاملEffects of Hydro-alcoholic Extract of Red Dried Stigmas of Crocus sativus L. Flowers (saffron) on the Levels of Pituitary-ovary Hormones and Folliculogenesis in Rats
Background In the present study the effects of a hydro-alcoholic saffron (Crocus sativus) extract on pituitary-ovary axis and folliculogenesis were investigated. The aim was to study the possible role of saffron in female fertility and thereby show its usefulness in treating infertility and reproductive disorders in females. MaterialsAndMethods The study consisted of 50 adult female Sprague daw...

A new Schiff base ligand (L) obtained by the condensation reaction of N-acetylaceto-otoluidineand 2-aminopropanoic acid (an amino acid), is used to synthesize four mononuclearcomplexes of [MLCl] and [ML2] types (where M = Cu(II) and Zn(II); L = Schiff base) bykeeping the metal and ligand ratio as 1:1 and 1:2 respectively. This ligand and its complexeshave been characterized on the basis of diff...
متن کاملStudies upon the Gram Reaction of the Basiphil Cells of the Anterior Pituitary
The basiphil cell granules of the human anterior pituitary react positively with Gram's stain, but no specific differentiation of these granules occurs when the iodine treatment is omitted. The granules of the acidophil cells are Gram-negative. Various workers have suggested a connexion between the Gram reaction of various micro-organisms and the presence of ribonucleoprotein, and the pituitary...
